- Find out what’s already working. Most likely, you’re not doing everything wrong. You know what a healthy diet consists of, and you know exercise is important. Find out what has already been successful for you personally and use that as a guide to develop a plan for reaching your goals.
- Set realistic goals. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Getting into a healthy routine takes time and patience. If you are willing to make small strides, over a longer period of time, you’re more likely to achieve long-lasting success.
- Identify your support system. Start with your own attitude. Make sure you’re positive and upbeat about the challenge ahead. Then engage friends and family. Share your goals with them and ask for their support along the journey.
- Keep track of your success. Begin a food and exercise journal to monitor your progress. This will help you see improvements you’ve made since embarking on your newfound healthy lifestyle. It will also help hold you accountable.
- Be conscious about your portions. You don’t have to part with food you love just because it isn’t the healthiest option. Rather, cut back on how much of that food you consume. Remember the 80/20 rule and stick with healthy food and moderate exercise most of the time.

- Stay on track. Don’t allow slip-ups or off-weeks deter you from reaching your goals. Make sure you’ve thought about what a slip-up might equal in time exercising or another food you may cut out for the day. Keep your focus and remember that slow and steady wins the race.
- Celebrating. You’re working hard. Be sure to celebrate your successes and reward your efforts in ways that don’t include food. Treat yourself to a spa day, buy yourself that bike you always wanted, or go out with your loved ones or friends.
